The renovation of the bakery-pastry shop on rue des Halles in Biarritz accompanies a change in ownership and the arrival of the new brand OKINDEGIA. The project aims to breathe new life into the space with a renewed architectural expression, carefully responding to and integrating within the historic fabric of the Biarritz Halles district.
Once plain and understated, the storefront struggled to assert its presence despite its prime location opposite Biarritz’s market hall. The renovation project restores a scale coherent with the historic building it inhabits, while establishing a new identity visible from the public realm. The existing façade was completely stripped back, retaining only the glazed joinery, now framed by a new wooden façade. Through its composition and detailing, this intervention subtly references the city’s iconic Art Deco style.
Inside, the sales area is redesigned using a carefully curated palette of simple materials: plywood, white ceramic tiles, industrial steel shelving, and cork cladding that creates a continuous datum along the peripheral walls. This seemingly humble material is here reinterpreted and applied as a wall covering, treated like a noble surface that reveals its unique aggregates.
