RollAUUUUDITORIUM, 2024

AUUUUDITORIUM is both a flexible event space and a year-long multidisciplinary program. It is located on the second floor of the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai, in a space that once housed the Royal Asiatic Society’s auditorium. Throughout the year, artists, researchers, musicians, and performers are invited to take over the venue to host conferences, discussions, performances, concerts, screenings, fashion shows, and art installations.

Designed by Roll in collaboration with Berlin-based Singaporean artist Ming Wong, AUUUUDITORIUM reimagines the installation Scenography for a Science Fiction Opera, originally conceived as a fixed, frontal setup. The theatrical panel backdrops have been transformed into a flexible spatial toolkit, suspended from a custom-designed aluminum framework fixed to the ceiling. This innovative system enables diverse, non-hierarchical configurations, allowing the space to adapt dynamically to a variety of uses.

The setup is completed by a series of mobile elements: modular platforms adapted from technical raised flooring systems, monumental glowing orbs, speakers, and video projectors, offering a wide range of possibilities for staging diverse atmospheres and spatial configurations.

For the final event on the last night of AUUUUDITORIUM’s year-long run, the panels were taken down and laid out on the floor, creating seating for visitors. The closing performances happened on a long runway that stretched the full length of the gallery.
